Casanova Fantasy Variations

"Casanova Fantasy Variations for Three Cellos" is a substantial and rarely performed work by the Brazilian composer Walter Burle Marx. It sets three separate voices across a theme and twenty-five variations, drawing its subject from the life of Casanova. Cellist Dennis Parker had already recorded the world premiere audio of the piece. He brought it to the XR Studio to make its world debut as video.
Seventeen cellists perform it, past and present students from the Baton Rouge area. Parker rotates them through the twenty-five variations so that each player appears two or three times across the work. The result is a piece performed by an ensemble that never assembles: the trio changes continuously while the music runs unbroken.
That structure is what made the production interesting to us. A conventional recording would place seventeen musicians in one room and cut between them. Instead each variation received its own virtual environment, composited in real time on the LED volume and film stage, chosen to match the musical character of that section. The environment changes when the players change, so the visual language tracks the compositional one.
Working in real time rather than in post meant the performers could see the world they were playing inside. The environment was present in the room, lighting their faces and instruments with the same light the camera recorded. Nothing was added afterward to make the space believable, because the space was already there.
The techniques proved on this production, particularly real-time compositing across a long-form musical work with continuously changing environments, feed directly into the studio's virtual production and simulation practice.
